How to Download Instagram Stories – Step Guide

Last updated: October 25, 2026

Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours, so saving one you are allowed to keep is often a race against the clock. Unlike a normal post, a story has no permanent page you can return to later, which is why the safest approach is to save it while it is still live. This guide explains how to download Instagram Stories on Android, iPhone and a computer, using only your browser and the public story link.

Instagram itself does not offer a general save button for other people's stories. The method here works through the story downloader on this site: you copy the link of a public story, paste it into the tool, and save the resulting photo or video. You do not need to install an app, and you should never enter your Instagram password on a downloader site. If a story belongs to a private account, is expired, or is restricted, it cannot be downloaded this way, and no honest guide should promise otherwise.

Quick answer: Open the story in Instagram, copy its link, open the Instagram Story downloader, paste the link and press Download, then save the photo or video. It works for public stories only and needs no login.

Open the Instagram Story downloader

What you need

You need the link of a public Instagram Story that is still live, plus a browser on your phone or computer. Stories expire after 24 hours, so start before the story disappears. You do not need an Instagram login for the downloader, and you should never share your password with any downloader site.

Step 1: Open the story and copy its link

In the Instagram app, open the story you want to save. Tap the three dots (More) at the top right of the story, then tap Copy Link. Make sure you have opened the actual story viewer, not just the profile page, because a profile link will not work.

Step 2: Open the Instagram Story downloader

Open the Instagram Story downloader in your browser. Keep the copied link ready, and do not close the Instagram app until you have pasted it, in case the clipboard is cleared.

Step 3: Paste the link and press Download

Paste the story link into the box at the top of the page. Check that the full address is there, then press Download and wait for the result card to appear.

Step 4: Save the photo or video

Use the download button on the result card. On Android the file usually goes to the Downloads folder. On iPhone it goes to the Files app first, and you can then move it to Photos with Share and Save Video or Save Image. On a computer it goes to the browser Downloads folder.

On Android

Copy the story link in the Instagram app by tapping the three dots and then Copy Link. Open the downloader in Chrome or another browser, paste the link and press Download. The saved story photo or video usually lands in the Downloads folder, which you can open from the Files app or your browser download list. Because stories expire, do not leave a story for later if you intend to keep it.

On iPhone

On iPhone, open the downloader in Safari. After the file downloads, it does not automatically appear in the Photos app, and this is the point that confuses most people. Safari saves downloads to the Files app, not directly to Photos. Tap the download icon in the Safari address bar, tap Downloads, then tap the file to open it. To move it into Photos, tap Share and choose Save Video for a video or Save Image for a photo. If you only look in Photos and cannot find the file, check Files first, because the download almost certainly succeeded there. If Safari asks where to save, choose Downloads so you can find it again in Files. For stories, the confusion is worse because a story video saved to Files looks like it vanished if you check Photos straight away. Always open Files, then use Share to copy it into Photos.

On a computer

Open the story link in a desktop browser if the story is public, or copy the link from the Instagram app and send it to yourself so you can paste it on the computer. Open the downloader, paste the link and press Download. The browser saves the file to its default Downloads folder, or asks where to save it if that option is turned on.

Story quality, sound and expiry

The saved file is the version Instagram serves for that public story, so a story uploaded in lower quality stays lower quality, and a video story keeps its sound when the original includes it. There is no way to upgrade a story beyond the quality the creator uploaded. If a story has already expired, it is gone from the public story tray, and copying an old link will not bring it back.

Highlights are different from stories: they are saved stories shown on a profile after the 24-hour window. If the story you want is already in a highlight, use the highlights guide instead, because the link and the steps are slightly different. A story that is still live should be saved from its live story link, not from a screenshot of the profile page.

Troubleshooting

The link is a profile link, not a story link

Copy the link again from inside the story viewer, using the three dots and Copy Link. A link that ends at a username will not return a story.

The story has expired or is private

An expired story cannot be recovered through the downloader, and stories from private accounts are not accessible. Check that the story is still live and public.

The result card does not appear

Paste the link again in full, refresh the downloader page, and try once more. If another public story works, the problem is with the first story, not your device.

The file is saved but you cannot find it

On Android, check the Downloads folder. On iPhone, check the Files app first, then use Share to move the file into Photos. On a computer, check the browser Downloads folder.

Use downloaded content responsibly

Downloading a public story does not give you ownership or permission to republish it. Stories often contain faces, music and personal moments, so keep a saved story for personal use unless the creator has given you permission to share it further. Respect the creator and follow Instagram rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download an Instagram Story on my phone?

Yes. Copy the story link in the Instagram app, open the downloader in your phone browser, paste the link and press Download.

Do I need to install an app to download a story?

No. The downloader works in your browser, so there is nothing to install.

Do I need an Instagram account or password?

No. The downloader does not ask you to log in, and you should never enter your Instagram password on a downloader site.

Where is a downloaded story saved on iPhone?

It is saved to the Files app first. Open Files, tap the file, tap Share, and choose Save Video or Save Image to copy it into Photos.
